Chinawoman’s cinematic songs move from post-punk minimalism to European balladry, from suicide surf to grandiose choruses on melancholy themes. Decadent, dramatic and earnest, her dark vocals tackle subjects of infidelity and personal space in relationships, while vintage keyboards and synth strings create the solitary setting for these grand emotions.
The daughter of a Kirov ballerina and an engineer from Leningrad, Chinawoman grew up in Toronto, where she first started performing in the city’s small clubs. Since relocating to Berlin in 2010, she has been selling out concert halls and headlining festivals from Germany to Poland, Moscow and St. Petersburg. While she continues to record and release in a self-produced bedroom manner, maintaining the intimacy and singleness of expression to her music, her performances now include more show aspects and a line-up of musicians for a true concert experience.
