Processing Words 2014

The video installation pursues the question of how I perceive and understand German as a foreigner. Since starting to learn German, I have repeatedly encountered new words, the spelling and pronunciation of which I was unfamiliar with. When one learns a language that belongs to a different language family, it is very difficult to immediately recognize and spell a word correctly. As a first step, I often use my native language and an abstract symbol to remember the sound of a word. In the video, abstract shapes transform into German words. The video and depiction of the word and its phonetic spelling are next to each other. The words are ordered in relation to how I encounter them in my daily life. The multi-channel video installation focusses on the process of recognizing German word, from my own experience. Repetition, practice, understanding "Life is too short to learn German." Oskar Wilde
